NON-ABLATIVE LASERS
Most commonly referred to as diode, intense pulsed light (IPL) or pulsed dye,
non-ablative lasers pass varying colors and strengths of light through the skin
without injury to the skin surface. The light source is concentrated to target
its power deep down into the dermis to treat acne, veins and discolorations.
Non-ablative lasers have also shed some light on rejuventation by improving
skin tone and texture, and are also used in permanent hair removal. To be fully
effective, non-ablative laser use may require special prepping of the skin—such as
microdermabrasion
or special topical enhancements called photodynamic therapy
(PDT). PDT, which is especially effective for acne, entails the application of a
light-reactive agent called Levulan to the skin for 30 minutes or longer prior to
laser treatment.
Pros: There's minimal to no downtime and very little discomfort.
Cons: It may take multiple treatments and results can be inconsistent.
Not all non-ablative lasers are safe for all complexions.
