Doctor Q&A

In what ways are you philanthropy-minded?

While much of my time is dedicated to age-defying makeovers, I devote 20 percent of my practice to complex reconstructive work. I serve as the Senior Advisor of the FACE TO FACE Committee, a national organization offering pro-bono reconstructive surgery to victims of domestic violence. Also, I regularly travel to Colombia with Healing the Children where I provide pro-bono reconstructive surgeries on children born with facial deformities.

Why is giving back so important to you?

This aspect of my work is so gratifying. It’s why I became a facial plastic surgeon. Many of my pro-bono patients have suffered disfigurement due to domestic violence, while others were born with deformities. I can remove some of the physical scars so they can move on with their lives.

How are you helping to advance the field at large?

Between sculpting noses, chins and cheekbones, I conduct clinical research, lecture, teach, write and enjoy formulating new products. My studies are regularly published in leading medical journals, and my book for consumers, Face the Facts, helps to demystify and define the surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic facial treatments for aging.

What alternative occupation would you choose?

Architecture—designing libraries or museums—is very appealing to me.

What are some of your hobbies?

I enjoy traveling, biking, golfing, tennis, classical guitar, painting and writing.

What’s one thing you’re never without?

I’m never without hugs from my four children.

What are some of your proudest moments thus far in your career?

Being named National Chair of FACE TO FACE was a great experience. I am proud to share the work I do with others to raise awareness about the critical issue of domestic violence. Watch my new reality TV show “Facing Trauma” out this fall on OWN Network and Discovery Fit & Health.
