The FDA Just Approved a Lip Filler That Lasts a Year featured image

Lip fillers have become an increasingly popular treatment option for those who want to plump up their lips. Using a hyaluronic acid filler to achieve a fuller lip or fill lip lines is a quick, effective and until now a very temporary treatment option, lasting anywhere from two-to-six months. But the latest news on dermal fillers is going to change that. Today, the FDA approved Juvéderm Ultra XC for use on the lips and perioral area.

What this means for patients is that you can now choose an injectable filler for your lips that will last longer than just a few months—meaning less visits to the doctor to maintain your desired results. Philippe Schaison, Executive Vice President and President of Allergan Medical, said in a release, “With this approval, Juvéderm Ultra XC is now the only filler that is approved to last up to one year in the lips while providing natural-looking results.”

During clinical trials, more than 78 percent of subjects using Juvéderm Ultra XC reported overall satisfaction with the look and feel of their lips at the one-year mark. While doctors have reportedly seen a recent increase in the number of younger patients requesting lip augmentations, the FDA has granted its approval for the use of this filler on adults over the age of 21. For those over the age of consent, but still under 21, they will just have to wait for this longer-lasting filler. Patients should always consult with a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon when considering a lip enhancement procedure.
