Silicone And The Standing Mri

Among the discussions at the annual meeting of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery this year, a question arose: Should women screening silicone implants have a standing MRI?

Specifically questioned was whether or not a standing MRI results in a better screening method for silicone breast implants, as opposed to a recumbent position. Statistically, most implant leakage is suggested to be at the bottom of the implant due to weight and gravity pressures. By having a standing MRI, the implant is in a position where weight and gravity are influencing the implant. When lying down, the filler and weight of the implant is redistributed; therefore, minor leaks can be missed.

While the discussion continues, the guidelines remain: women with silicone breast implants that are functioning well should undergo an MRI three years after insertion and every year thereafter to screen for potential leaks or changes to the implant.
