If you’re trying to fix a loss of volume in your face, micro-grafting fat transfer, a technique that transplants fat to the face in small amounts, can help. “Micro-grafting fat achieves a good result with the least traumatic cannula so that the fat is deposited without rupturing the cells,” says Beverly Hills, CA, plastic surgeon Andrew Ordon, MD.

During the procedure, fat is taken from the body and transplanted to volume deficient areas of the face. “Preserving the integrity of the cell membrane prevents the fat cell from becoming damaged. When it is squeezed through too small of a cannula it will yield short-term results,” says Beverly Hills, CA, plastic surgeon Ritu Chopra, MD.

After the procedure you’ll have a naturally fuller, healthier look and if you decide that more fat needs to be added at a later date, it always can be. Bruising and swelling are normal and can last upward of a few weeks, but you should be able to resume your regular activity and lifestyle after one week or so. “When fat transfer is done right it can make a huge difference,” says Chicago plastic surgeon Peter Geldner, MD. “The goal is to look like yourself only better.”
