Reloxin has impressed doctors and patients in 23 countries as a wrinkle-treating alternative form of botulinum toxin type A, which is used on U.S. patients as Botox Cosmetic. And now, the makers of this lower-protein option are hoping to win over Americans with the results of a recent study.
Researchers injected Reloxin into five forehead sites on over 1,000 patients, and assessed the substance's effectiveness, longevity and safety. They found that it was generally well-tolerated, and that the clinical effect was sustained over 13 months.
Some say this is longer than Botox is known to typically last, and researchers say this is probably due to less of a "protein load," which means the body will break it down slower. However, other studies show that Botox can last longer.
As Reloxin awaits U.S. approval, the jury is still out on whether or not it's actually better than Botox; but at the very least, many experts expect it to be a serious competitor for the the most popular injectable on the market.
