Braces are a great solution for straightening your teeth. For many, especially adults and self-conscious teenagers, the biggest downfall of wearing braces is the amount of time they must stay on, usually months or years. But in the very near future your doctor may be able to prescribe an at-home device that when used daily can cut the amount of time you wear your braces in half.
The AcceleDent device is designed to fasttrack orthodontic tooth movement through gentle microvibrations that accelerates bone remodeling. According to the company, this allows teeth to move 38-50 percent faster. The lightweight device is to be used 20 minutes a day by biting gently on the mouthpiece. While doing so, you’re free to do normal activities like watching TV or reading.
The AcceleDent system received FDA clearance late last month and is preparing to launch the product throughout the U.S.
"Orthodontic manufacturers have tweaked brackets and wires for years in the hope of gaining some small advances in shortening the total treatment time patients must wear braces. That area of advancement has been tapped completely. AcceleDent has adapted existing technology from orthopedics that has been proven to be safe and effective in causing bones to heal more quickly and applied it to orthodontics. I can deliver the same great care to my patients but much more quickly. Who wouldn't want that?” says St Louis, MO orthodontist Lawrence Levens, DDS.
