Poll: Would You Wear Braces as an Adult?

Fact: Researchers at University of California, San Francisco have identified 19 different types of smiles. Fact: An Orbit Complete survey found that 69 percent of people said that women are more attractive when they smile. Fact: It’s a lot harder to smile when you’re not confident about the appearance of your teeth.

Luckily, there are a lot of options out there to fix whatever it is that’s preventing you from smiling—be it crooked, stained teeth, or another dental issue. “We can do veneers, bleaching, bonding, and simple contouring and shaping and if they don’t want traditional braces, or use Invisilign,” says Las Vegas cosmetic dentist Clark E. Cressman, DDS.

Perhaps the most classic way to straighten out your teeth is with braces. But since we often think of awkward teenagers with braces, the idea of having them as an adult can have us running for the hills. Even though there are a lot of other options out there, “Sometimes they don't have enough effectiveness and you have to go to full braces to do certain things,” says Huntersville, NC, cosmetic dentist Ross Nash, DDS.

That said, we want to know how far you would go for a million dollar smile. Tell us, if you could have perfect teeth in one year, would you wear braces as an adult?

MBE: Funny, my brother is running into the same issue. We both had braces as teens and were far from diligent when wearing our retainers. However his teeth shifted worse than mine without a doubt. I can deal with my smile (although I would love if my teeth were 2 shades whiter and I didn't clench). He on the other hand is now considering Invisalign to correct the years worth of work thrown down the drain. If only we could see into the future...our Orthodontist would certainly say I told you so.

Like Wongdragon, I wore braces in high school. Started wearing them at the end of elementary - serious underbite! Well, I also flaked on the retainer too. I have a permanent retainer on the back of my bottom teeth, but my mouth has shifted over the years. I would wear braces again - but I'm a little embarrassed to think my parents wasted their money on their flakey kid!

YES! I had braces for 4.5 years, and it was the best purchase ever! I always get compliments about my smile!

I would and I did wear braces @29. Invisalign was not available then so I got the traditional braces but w/the clear brackets. It was not really noticeable w/the exception of the wire running thru. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

If I had health insurance I would be wearing braces at 36, I care more about having great teeth, than what others will say of a 36 year young with braces :)
