Braces Are No Longer Just For Teens

For every 10 patients who go to the orthodontist, two of them are adults, says the American Association of Orthodontists, which also agrees with the American Board of Orthodontics that the number of adult orthodontic patients is steadily rising. In fact, specialists from New York and Washington raise the figure to 15 to 20 percent, based on their own experiences as individual practitioners.

That's right, the stigma on braces for adults appears to be disappearing. So why are women and men in theirs 30s, 40s and even 50s making appointments with orthodontists? The implements are higher tech than when we were all teenagers and less visible than before. Not to mention research from Psychology Magazine and Kelton Research suggests that having straight teeth helps in almost all aspects of life.

Apparently people with straight teeth:

- Have a better social life
- Get the job
- Are wealthier
- Are healthier
- Are smarter

Fifty-seven percent of people surveyed would also rather have a nice smile over clear skin, and 73 percent of people surveyed were more likely to trust someone with straight teeth.

And with all the new technology available that doesn't give the dreaded "metal mouth," adults can get straighter teeth, easier. "With Invisalign, as well as other techniques, such as traditional braces, veneers, etc. it is easily achievable for most people," says Dunedin, FL, cosmetic dentist H. Mikel Hopkins, DDS.

I always encourage my new patients who have crowded teeth or other bite problems to have orthodontic treatment because it is the most economical way to have straighter teeth. But they must agree to wear retainers for the rest of their lives at least nightly to preserve the new smile. Even if the patients need some restorative treatment for discolored or other esthetic problems, if first straightening the teeth will get a better result I encourage them to take the time to obtain the very best result through Invisalign or other orthodontic methods.
