A Less Painful Procedure For Receding Gums

When a person is unhappy with the shortness of his or her teeth or the how much gum shows while smiling, gum contouring is a relatively easy surgical solution. But what about the opposite: teeth that look too long due to receding gums?

Traditionally, this problem has been address with gum grafting, which involves excising tissue from the roof of the mouth and using it to replace lost gum tissue. However, this procedure often comes with a painful recovery period-mostly because of the palate-so periodontal researchers at Tufts University sought to prove the effectiveness of a less invasive alternative.

Instead of using donor tissue from a person's palate, this new regeneration technique uses a collagen membrane as the graft, which is soaked in the patient's platelets from blood that has been drawn the same day, and then surgically secured over the tooth root. The researchers found that, after three years, the results were comparable to that of traditional gum grafting, and the cosmetic outcome is superior.

“Patients have a less invasive treatment option for receding gums, and we now have evidence to support the stability of this relatively painless procedure. Instead of leaving the dental office with stitches in the roof of their mouth, a patient leaves with a small bandage on the arm that can be removed in an hour," said associate professor, department chair and researcher Terrence Griffin, DMD, in the July 2009 issue of the Journal of Periodontology. He goes on to say that while the procedure is a bit more expensive for the patient and a bit more complicated for the doctor, "this treatment for gum recession results in proper coverage of the tooth root, better aesthetics than those found with traditional gum grafting surgery, and enhanced patient satisfaction with the results."

Joyce - Thank you for the info on regrowing your gums with the collagen powder. you were correct in recommending iherbs.com as the cheapest. I just bought some. I'm praying it will work on my badly receding gums (i've already had 3 surgeries on quadrants & they've receded again!). If this works, I'll be posting to every gum recession thread there is. Gingival Grafting is painful & expensive (I had mine done in tijuana). They charge 5X more in the U.S. Total ripp-off! So many people badly need the surgery (or hopefully, can benefit from the collagen) - but it's so expensive - few actually get it. I will post back in a month with my results.

Hi there, I have really bad receding gums that even dental implants arent possible bcos I also have bone loss. I have discovered something by chance to help u grow gums back. yes u heard me, my gums have grown by 50 percent since I started consuming collagen type 1 n 3 and type 2. Ive been on them for nearly 4 weeks now and theres significant improvement. I had a tooth that would move when my retainers came off bcos my dentist said that it was due to the bone loss and since being on collagen, that tooth now stays in place when the retainer comes off. I am hoping that the gums will fil back all the gaps I have and so far this looks promising. Its way much cheaper. One months supply of collagen of type 1n3 n type 2 cost me like under 40usd. cheap and effective so far.Im also consuming strontium for bone building and the usual calcium nmagnesium.strontium has helped people suffering from osteoperosis n has been proven to be effective. Its funny cos none of the dentists are promoting this and I am thrilled that what once was thought impossible(growing gums) is indeed possible and most importantly affordable. I do not work for a collagen supplement company or www.iherb.com and I am not paid for my comments. I am currently taking Drs Best , Ive purchased Neocell but I havent tried it so I cant comment on its effectiveness. So far www.iherb.com seems to give better prices I think. Please do look into collagen type 1n3 n type 2 and strontium for your gums n teeth

Dr. Perio
As a periodontist, I perform the connective tissue grafts (gum grafts) on a daily basis. Most patients have minimal discomfort from the procedure and the results of using the patient's own tissue are far more predictable that other methods. Also, the tissue looks more natural and longer lasting. Using the collagen membrane and the platelet-rich plasma is costly (adds approximately $350-700) more per procedure.
