A One-Step Smile Corrector

Bonding can be a quick fix for a variety of problems, including chipped, broken, slightly crooked and discolored teeth. If you're on a time crunch, bonding is a fast option, in terms of how quickly you'll see results, but, generally, it's reserved to treat minor concerns. “With bonding, I'm much more selective with patients than I am with veneers, which can do so much more,” says New York cosmetic dentist Irwin Smigel, DDS. Bonding uses a special composite material that's bonded to the teeth to restore shape, evenness and/or color.

The quality of the results of a bonding procedure is very technique-sensitive, says Dr. Smigel. “When you spend the time to isolate every area, then bonding lasts a long time,” Dr. Smigel says. “I would say the average in the U.S. is about five to 10 years, but I've had cases that have lasted much longer.”

Bonding is not as stain-sensitive as other options such as porcelain veneers. However, we think bonding is a great option because the results are fast, it's less expensive than other cosmetic procedures and it requires minimal tooth removal.

In today's economy many people are looking for a more cost effective way to improve the appearance of their teeth and smile. Direct composite bonding can be used for many of the same purposes of porcelain veneers. While indirect laminate veneers can provide excellent aesthetics and good longevity, they require two appointments, laboratory fabrication and more expense than direct composite resin veneers. Direct composite resin veneers can be built directly on the natural teeth in one appoint. Composite resin is a mixture of glass and plastic while porcelain veneers are 100% glass. The plastic may deteriorate with time and can absorb some stain from pigments in the liquids and foods that we take in. However, longevity of these materials has proven to be even better than we expected a number of years ago. Ten to fifteen years is not unreasonable to expect with modern composite materials. Because the cost can be less for the dentist to provide the treatment, the cost to the patient can be more affordable. The final result is the hands of the dentist and some have more artistic ability than others. Performed well, direct composite resin veneers can provide our patients with a more affordable option for aesthetic smile improvement.

After having done many direct bonding smile makeovers, we find our patients are extremely happy with their results. As with any dental proceedure long term success depends heavily on routine dental care and check-ups. I love having direct bonding as an option for patients and they love the results ! Costs generally are less than indirect porcelain veneers but the more artistic and time intensive the process the more it will cost.
