When Eyelid Surgery Is More Than Aesthetic

Blepharoplasty is largely considered a cosmetic procedure. Removal of fat and excess skin from the eyelids is often performed to make the eye area appear more youthful and less tired.

What many may not realize is that if your upper eyelid skin sags so far down that your vision is consequently impaired-a condition called ptosis-blepharoplasty is then considered a medically necessary reconstructive surgery.

This means it may be eligible for insurance coverage. Precertification is a must, however, so be sure to discuss this with your surgeon during your initial consultation.

This is not entirely accurate. There are 2 seperate conditions affecting the eyelids for which insurance may cover a correction. One of these is the presence of so much extra skin that it hangs over the eyelid blocking the vision. A second condition is a disruption in the normal mechanism, which raises the upper eyelid. This is called ptosis and when severe enough can lead to visual loss and a corrective operation is usually an insurance covered benefit. Both of these operations result in a more aesthetic eyelid appearance.

I had this procedure done, and had to have it done because of vision problems. Not all of it was covered by insurance, so make sure you get cost information all up front before your surgery. And go with someone who specializes in it. I am very happy with it and it made a big difference with my whole appearance of my face.
