Holding back breakouts before the big day

Posted Wednesday, May 30, 2007 by Paige Loren Herman, NewBeauty Executive Editor & Beauty Director

I went to try a SilkPeel yesterday (stay tuned for a posting about my experience), and the aesthetician recommended Obagi CLENZIderm MD to tackle my breakouts before I get married three weeks from now. It contains prescription-strength levels of salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, and according to Obagi, the system delivers visible results within two weeks.

I promptly tried it as soon as I got home, envisioning clear, flawless skin for my big day. My first impression of this three-step regimen (that you only need to use when you're broken out): it smells eerily similar to Salon Selectives shampoo. (Remember that stuff?) The cleanser is a pretty shade of purple, and after washing the suds away, I was left with a cool, tingly feeling.

Next up: the toner, which is also lavender with the same scent. Again, I felt cool and tingly—like it was definitely working.

Last is the serum, which I accidentally applied with my hands since I didn't read the directions to see that I was supposed to put it on a cotton pad. It, too, had a cool sensation, which lingered even after I applied the Benev hyaluronic acid moisturizer I was given. (These products can be on the drying side, so I was told a good moisturizer with sunscreen is a must.)

The next morning, I definitely felt like my breakout was on the downswing. The inflammation was gone, and the healing process was well on its way. Here's to hoping Clenziderm puts my pores into hibernation until the wedding!

the very first time that i used clenziderm, i noticed a difference in my skin already! i was so excited to have clear skin! 3 days later... i broke out with rashes all over my skin. i stopped using it for about 2 weeks when the rashes finally went away. so then i started it again but this time skipping step 3 and only using it every 2 days. it seems to be working better that way. i've been using it for 2 months now and my skin hasnt cleared up completely as i expected. still get the occassional breakouts before my cycle. seems like my face will never get clear! how is it working for you so far??? did you rash up like i did?

I tried this product for one week. I honestly do not think I have sensitive skin, but Clenziderm completely dried out my skin within two days and made me break out immediately. I thought that I would stick it out (using #3 every other day as recommended)... knowing some products make it worse before better, but when my skin actually hurt when I talked I knew it was time to send it back. I think this product made me break out as bad as I did when I was a teenager. I am now using another product that NewBeauty recommended: Acne Recovery. It has really helped with my acne.

I had severe acne as a teenager and now that I'm in my 30's I have an occasional breakout. I would always read in the beauty magazines that you should apply a moisturizer on your face but I was reluctant because of my acne-prone skin. I'm not sure why I decided to give the Made from Earth Vitamin Enhanced Moisturizer a try but I am so glad I did. I have been using it every day for over a year now. It does not make my skin breakout at all (a big plus in my book). It makes my skin very smooth and gives me that "dewy" look. It also helps my foundation look more natural looking because the moisturizer is so hydrating. I also like the fact that it protects my skin from the sun.

I would definitely recommend this product to anyone looking for a moisturizer. Despite it's high price (compared to other brands) it's definately worth it, especially since it lasts for a long time.
