Post-op pain management

Posted Friday, January 22, 2010

Some pain and discomfort following a surgical procedure are expected, and managing it is important for your well-being and recovery. With some procedures, where oral painkillers have been prescribed in the past, patients are now being offered pain pumps.

While oral painkillers enter the bloodstream and can affect the whole body (such as drowsiness or nausea), a pain pump is a device that delivers anesthetic directly to the surgery site with side-effects that generally don’t affect the whole body.

Pain pumps aren't for everyone, nor are they appropriate for every type of surgery. Most commonly, these are beneficial to body contouring surgery like breast procedures, tummy tucks and body lifts.

Whether or not they are a better choice for you than oral medication depends on you, your procedure and your doctor. Discuss the options with your doctor prior to your surgery.

Depending on the procedure performed, there are also some local anesthetic agents that can be injected to help minimize post operative discomfort.
The type of anesthetic used can vary based on the intensity of the procedure.
For instance, some of my patients that get fillers have some anesthetic mixed into the filler and this provides anesthesia for at least an hour afterwards.
When I inject the lips, I usually do nerve blocks and this provides comfort during and after the procedure.
For procedures such as lipo, the tumescent technique puts in some anesthetic that provides long term relief.
For tummy tucks and breast augmentation, my colleagues the plastic surgeons use oral medications that are usually adequate but in some instances may use pain pumps that allow patients to control their anesthesia.
When you have questions about anesthesia (particularly if you have experience with prior surgeries) speak with your doctor and have a plan in place
