Topical anesthetic caution
Posted Monday, February 12, 2007 by Marie Czenko Kuechel
Laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, injectables and other “medi-spa” treatments may offer a topical anesthetic for your comfort, like a lidocaine cream. However, there are some serious cautions.
Although topical, the anesthetic can absorb through the skin and enter your blood stream. Too large an area treated, or too much topical anesthetic over time can result in irregular heartbeat, seizures and in rare cases, even death.
For this reason, the only place and only time topical or any anesthetic should be used is in a medical setting under the supervision of a properly trained physician.
