Parabens: pretty safe after all?

Parabens: pretty safe after all?

Posted Wednesday, December 02, 2009

Just as mainstream brands have started taking paraben concerns into consideration and taking parabens out of many products, the organizations that take a stringent anti-paraben stance have been dealt an investigational blow.

Europe's Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety performed tests involving propylparaben and butylparaben, two common parabens used as preservatives in numerous personal-care products and accused of engendering hormonal effects and health problems by several environmental groups, some of which won't give a product its seal of approval if parabens are present.

According to the results, the parabens are only partially absorbed when applied to mouse skin; furthermore, they're completely metabolized before getting a chance to enter the bloodstream. Blood plasma tests showed no presence of the compounds.

The findings confirm for many pro-paraben pundits that parabens, at the level used in beauty products, are incapable of producing an adverse effect, as mammals metabolize the compounds too fast. The results will likely be interpreted by numerous manufacturers as a green light to continue or return to using parabens as a safe product-preserving option.

These were not longterm studies however. I question the longterm effects of the use of parabens in our products

This reminds me of trans-fat. Everybody wanted to avoid saturated fat so they tried to substitute it with something that turned out to be even worse. Scientists should be looking at the substitutes people use in place of parabens just as much as parabens themselves.

Still don't trust them! I use products without parabens. End of story.

I'm sick of companies putting harmful things in our personal care products that COULD hurt us. Just leave the crap out! If I want to ingest chemicals I'll eat a bag of Doritos.
Furthermore, I don't trust a lab that says we have nothing to worry about-- there's too much room for corruption from those companies that have everything to gain from keeping parabens in our products. Think about it: There was cause enough for concern that parabens were harmful before and now they're completely okay? Sounds very convenient to me-- just like the criminals who are pushing these harmful vaccinations, calling them safe and not even testing them...

I'm more concerned about the animal testing, frankly.

I'm wondering why parabens have been found in breast cancer cells removed from patients if parabens don't penetrate the skin. Our skin does not protect us the way it was initially designed to do. With all the exfoliation products and techniques used today, skin is more transparent.

Is that meant to say "moist" skin, or is it really MOUSE skin? Since when do mice use cosmetics? Mice do not expose themselves to parabens, and people who choose to expose themselves to parabens have no right to put cosmetics or their ingredients on animals that never asked to wear cosmetics. Shame on people who buy products tested on animals! Volunteer to be the test subject if you want to use cosmetics with "questionable" ingredients. Stop the cruelty of animal testing for human vanity!

First of all, I agree with the person that mentioned the study, and there are several, that shows parabens in breast cancer tissue. Clearly there is penetration and parabens have been one of the chemicals that contribute to breast cancer. Secondly, the skin is the largest organ of the body and absorbs everything. These are toxic chemicals that caused enough concern that companies started to remove them from products. I FOR ONE MINUTE DON'T BELIEVE SUDDENLY THEY ARE SAFE. THESE DRUG COMPANIES ARE IMMORAL, AND GREEDY AND CARE ONLY ABOUT THE BOTTOM LINE. DON'T FORGET, THE MORE DRUGS THEY MAKE TO PUT IN PRODUCTS, MEDICATE YOU, AND RUIN OUR ENVIRONMENT WITH PESTICIDES, INSECTICIDES....etc., (TOO MANY TO MENTION) THE MORE MONEY THEY MAKE. THE DRUG INDUSTRYS, MEDICINE AND INSURANCE COMPANIES ARE ALL IN CAHOOTS AND IT IS IN THEIR BEST INTEREST TO KEEP US SICK, THEY GET RICH OFF OF IT. We need to focus on prevention of disease and ONE WAY TO DO THAT IS ELIMINATE ALL THE TOXIC CHEMICALS!!

First, enough with the animal testing. It tortures innocent beings and we get bad science from it. Secondly, I don't buy this new spin on a chemical that has been shown to be detrimental and penetrates the body systemically long term. They must think we are all idiots.

i have always felt that parabens were safe. companies have been using peoples fear of parabens as marketing angles to sell their product making claims like " paraben free" to imply that their products are of better quality.
as a natural skin care developer I know that preservatives are needed to ensure stablity of a cosmetic product with a shelf life and its not as much the type of preservative used but the concentration and amount that is used in the product. what is most important is that the finished product is safe, stable and does not contain elevated numbers of bacteria, molds and yeasts.
using parabens in less than 1% concentration in a cosmetic formula is completley safe in my opinion!

This is the same crap they pull with mineral oil or aspertame being good for you and in no way causes cancer or other health problems.

Parabens and all the other preservatives added to skin cremes, foods and other products we come into contact with on a daily basis add up to the elevated levels we should not be ingesting or placing on our skin.

There needs to be proper labeling of products and foods to ensure that consumers have a choice. Just like the warning on cigarettes. It is obviously a free country, but we should have the right to know if something we are coming into contact with could cause cancer, no matter what level they have used to test it. These companies are unable to control the rate at which a consumer uses, how much they use and over what time periods they use the products. After a certain point these parabens probably build up to "toxic" levels and we should be aware on any level that the product ingredients could be dangerous. LABELLING PERIOD!!!

I am against the use of preservatives, there are several skin care product lines on the market that do not utilitze parabens.

I am very heartened to see all these people concerned with animals being used to test cosmetic ingredients. Even mice are capable of suffering. It is immoral to exploit animals for any and all human concerns, no matter how trivial, as in fashion and make up. As for parabens, why use something that MAY or MAY NOT be an endocrine disruptor? It's totally unnecessary and no cream or lotion is worth the risk of breast cancer, uterine fibroids, etc.

The people who pointed out that parabens have been found in higher concentrations in the breast cells of women w/ breast cancer than in women w/out breast cancer directly contradicts the claim that parabens cannot penetrate the skin are absolutely right. Many studies have found this, + in real women, not mice. This is just 1 study on mice. Is it possible that humans differ from mice in some ways? Hmmm. I wonder. Industry doesn't generally do things(like reformulate make-up) that costs it money unless there is a darned good reason!

If you are not a cosmetic chemist or scientist with a background in this field i really dont think one should make assumptions about skin care ingredients being harmful. Most of the information floating around in the media and on line about parabens are false.
unfortunatley people have been brainwashed that they are bad so its great to have some additional scientific studies to show that it not harmful to the internal system . if you are getting your information from the internet about parabens and other ingredients being bad and causing cancer i would suggest you get a better source that is based on science not myths and fear. just my 2 cents. for those still adamant that parabens will cause harm and cancer then I am assuming you dont expose yourself to any chemicals that the media and internet say are harmful? the reality is that yes its important to do what you can to not expose yourself to harmful chemicals if you can but you also need to make decisions based on facts.

I think we all have more to worry about the water we drink than anything we put on our faces! With all the medications we flush down the toilets, the herbicides and pesticides used in agriculture, and anything else that is put in or on the ground, it ends up in our drinking water. Latest info is that they have even found rocket fuel! How is that for your skin! What is a little paraben compared to that? One iota over the big picture? You can stop using cosmetics but you can't stop drinking water and the bottled water doesn't cut it either. A lot of that is just tap water!

Just reading this little bit of the study...When hormones are applied to the skin they are not really detected in the serum (a typical venous blood draw). Hormones or other products like parabens if they are metabolized at the tissue level should be tested with saliva, urine or a finger stick for capillary blood. Just because they couldn't detect them with a standard serum lab, doesn't mean they don't affect us in a negative way. The skin is highly absorptive and covers a large area. I say this study does not in any way prove the safety of parabens. I firmly believe parabens should be removed from skin care products along with all other petroleum based substances.

I'm a mom and I get real worried every time I read about these chemicals in our everyday lives - who knows what my kids are exposed to. I happened to come across a website (www.home-health-chemistry.com) that gives recipes on how to detect for dangerous chemicals such as parabens, BPA, lead and others - those that want to be more proactive should check it out.
Keep safe!

Have a background in Biology/pre-med and also an animal lover with 2 dogs. Just lost my dog to cancer of the spleen. I have and continue to do extensive study on the effects of chemicals, cancer, nutrition, etc. Our bodies are inundated with chemicals in every form, food, water, air, products we put on our bodies, in our mouths, clean our houses, laundry, & of course drugs & vaccines. CANCER RATE 1 IN 4 & GROWING. The body gets overloaded over a period of time & cannot complete the most important metabolic processes like the KREBS cycle & ATP which produces energy in the cell by the mitochondria, to name a few. THESE CHEMICALS GET INTO OUR DNA, CHANGE THE MOLECULAR STRUCTURE AND CAUSE MUTATIONS. Animals are getting cancer at a rate that people are and even the most expensive dog food is a joke. HIGHLY PROCESSED WITH LITTLE NUTRITIONAL VALUE. MY POINT HERE IS CANCER IS A SYMPTOM, A HORRIBLE ONE AND THE CURE IS IN THE PREVENTION. DON'T TAKE THEIR WORD THAT TH

This is misleading. We are signatories to the Environmental Working Group Compact for Safe Cosmetics. Their cosmeticsdatabase.com is an exhaustive, objective resource to research skin care ingredients. They aggregate third party studies and research and rate them as low, medium or high hazard. They rate propylparaben and butylparaben as Moderate Hazard, but methylparaben is High Hazard. http://bit.ly/6plNJV There is strong evidence that methylparaben is linked to a number of health hazards.
