Liposuction vs. tummy tuck

Posted Tuesday, June 02, 2009

If you need just a little bit of help getting your stomach flat and flab-free, your doctor may recommend liposuction instead of a tummy tuck, especially if you have excess fat but not excess skin that needs to be removed or stretched-out muscle that needs to be tightened.

It's best to consult with your plastic surgeon to determine if you're an ideal candidate for liposuction to the abdominal area. Unlike a tummy tuck, liposuction to the tummy and surrounding areas involves a much shorter recovery period. However, it will not tighten up loose skin like a tummy tuck can.

I'm still not sure which one I should get... I think I may need both! Is a combination possible?

Dr. Armando Soto | Plastic Surgeon
The three components of the abdominal wall are skin, fat and muscle layers. If you have an excess amount of skin, you will probably be best suited for a traditional tummy tuck. If fat is the main concern, I perform a modified liposuction abdominoplasty, which concentrates on removing excess flab. If the muscle is also loose, I will do a hybrid abdominoplasty and tighten the muscle.
