Can sugar cause breakouts?
Posted Thursday, May 07, 2009
The chocolate-will-give-you-zits myth was put to bed a long time ago, but it's not completely without merit. Recent research has shown a connection between refined sugar intake and acne.
Sugar causes an insulin response, which causes a cascade effect of hormone production, leading to greater activity in the sebaceous glands. That means more oil output.
A simple adjustment in your diet may help prevent acne flare-ups. Your best bet? Cut out refined sugars about one month before a big event to reduce the chance of badly-timed breakouts. Maintaining a well-balanced diet and proper sleeping habits is also important; in general, healthier eating leads to healthier skin.
