Hair color and cancer in older women

Posted Wednesday, July 28, 2010

Over the last 30 years, hair dyes have become safer due to manufacturers removing many carcinogens from their formulas. But those who consistently used hair dye before the 1980s may have a higher risk of cancer—specifically, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Research has shown a significant increase in this kind of cancer among women who started coloring their hair in the decades before healthier dye, with lifelong users of dark permanent color at the highest risk.

No increased risk has been detected in women who've been consistently coloring their hair only during the last three decades.

Were you coloring your hair in the '50s, '60s or '70s? Does this research raise a concern for you? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
