Liposuction and your body type

Posted Thursday, February 18, 2010

The structure of your body can dictate the general areas that can benefit from liposuction. Below, five body-type-centric approaches.

1. Athletic.
Just because you're muscular doesn't mean you're immune to stubborn fat deposits. Liposuction is ideal for fat in muscular areas since the fat tends to pocket away from the muscle with age, rather than provide a nice, even layer of coverage. Target zones to consider: flanks and back, inner thighs, knees, upper arms.

2. Hourglass.
Liposuction can be used to bring exaggerated curves into proportion with the rest of your body. The fibrous, dense fat of the back, hips and thighs can benefit from ultrasound-assisted liposuction to first liquefy the fat, then extract it from the body to shape new curves. Target zones to consider: upper arms, bra line, hips, outer and inner thighs.

3. Pear.
Pear-shaped women find most of their excess weight from the waist down. But in the case of excess skin, a lower bodylift may be more appropriate. Target zones to consider: hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, ankles.

4. Apple.
Those with an "apple" shape tend to hold excess weight in their midsection, while arms and legs are slender. Like the "pear" shape, this body type might benefit more from a bodylift—in this case, circumferential—or a tummy tuck when there's a great deal of extra skin. Target zones to consider: tummy, hips, buttocks, breasts.

5. Slender.
Even the thinnest woman can have areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. However, slender women considering liposuction in hopes of fat transfer may not have enough fat necessary to inject too-flat areas such as the buttocks. Target zones to consider: around the navel, inner thighs.
