Transform too-short teeth

Posted Thursday, July 22, 2010

Sometimes, lengthening your teeth can be all it takes to get a spectacular smile.

Since it's all about proportion, you can't overlook your gums. Genetics may be to blame, or even improper hygiene when braces were worn. Cosmetic gum procedures can be done in a single appointment. They're generally painless, and teeth will appear longer when the gums heal.

On the flip side, teeth that appear too short may be the result of wear on the bottom edges of the teeth, so altering your bite is another way to make teeth look longer. Your dentist restores your back teeth in a more open position, creating space in the front so these teeth can be lengthened via bonding, porcelain veneers, or crowns.

If you select this approach, you must wear a temporary restoration for at least three months to make sure you don't have TMJ problems.

Have you tried either of these options? Tell those considering them what your experience was like by leaving a comment below.

Great subject to think about for an easy and dramatic enhancement to a smile!
Often times there is just too much pink and not enough white to the smile...simple gum treatment can quicky transform a smile and return a youthful look to the patient. Ask your dentist or hygienist.

Part I. It is true that truly short teeth either makes you look older and is often the result of a "Gummy Smile". The most important thing is to have a comprehensive diagnosis in order to come up with the appropriate treatment. Aesthetic proportions relative to your entire face, lip fullness, gender, race and age should all be analyzed for an aesthetic and natural looking smile that is specific to your face. The teeth themselves have a pleasing height to width proportion within themselves. So before changing your bite, having gum surgery or lengthening your teeth, start with really understanding the most ideal face, lip, gum and teeth proprtions as well as your skeletal and functional dimensions. A facial analysis via a computer analysis of photos, skeletal radiographs and three dimensional study casts can provide the keys to your best treatments.

Part II. Finally, to make sure you will be pleased with any gum or teeth treatments, often a Trial Smile appliance may take the anxiety out of treatment by you previewing what your teeth and smile can look like. A Trial Smile appliance fits over your present teeth and gum tissue and will act as the design prototype and treatment measuring guide for both surgery and teeth lengthening. It is reversible and is merely a three dimensional preview and guide. It should be designed from computer photo imaging and sculpted in wax on models. Fabricated in acrylic from the wax prototypes, it is then ready for evaluation in your mouth directly, the best way to really see the possibilities.

It is true that gum shaping can be a great way to deal with a gummy smile given the circumstances for successful gum removal are met. Oftentimes people have teeth that are covered by up to 33% by gum tissue. This would be like pulling the blinds down 1/3 of the way down a window and judging the size of the window with only that information. Raising the blind would revel a much longer window. This is a fantastic and inexpensive way to make teeth longer. There are also a few orthodontic ways to correct for teeth that are worn or hidden. Teeth can be moved so as to make them longer and more noticeable when one smiles, or in a conversational situation. It's not just when we smile that we should show our teeth.
