Surgery vs. noninvasive anti-aging treatments

Posted Friday, January 08, 2010

As helpful as sunscreen, exfoliation, and medically-based surface treatments are in the fight against aging, it's not realistic to expect noninvasive procedures and products to cure 40 or 50 years' worth of biological and environmental tissue damage.

Viable options include limited-incision facelifts and necklifts, which can reduce visible aging symptoms by about five years. Full facelifts and browlifts can provide more dramatic, longer-lasting results, enhancing one's overall youthfulness. Facial implants may add instant depth. And even rhinoplasty can rejuvenate an entire facial appearance by reshaping the nasal structure.

There's no one answer that can improve the signs of aging for all people, however, so patients and plastic surgeons must discuss the available options that will lead to good outcomes for your specific face and skin.

There is no doubt that the trend is toward minimally invasive and non-invasive treatments. Many of these have developed into effective alternatives, while others have not. My advice is to be skeptical of anything touted as a "nonsurgical facelift" because such a thing does not exist. Facelifts are not just tightened skin, they are a 3-dimensional reshaping of the face. On the other hand, it isn't just about volume either, so using fillers a la the "liquid facelift" can also be misleading. A plastic surgeon who also offers nonsurgical procedures is in the best position to give honest advice to help sort all this out.

The results possible between surgical and non-surgical or non-invasive treatments are not comparable. I think we can look at non-invasives and the "limited" incision / "mini" lifts as refreshing but they are not going to "take off years." While that little bit of a result is all that many people need, there are others that are essentially just throwing money away.

I encourage this group of patients to save the money and eventually use it for the procedure that is going to give them a real result.
