Medical tourism and its risks

Posted Monday, February 08, 2010

If you are packing your bags and heading abroad with the hopes of a vacation and makeover wrapped into one, be advised: the American Society of Plastic Surgeons will tell you this is not a safe venture.

Medical tourism, as ASPS calls it, is a growing trend, and consumers considering this route should be advised of everything from doctor and surgical facility qualifications to who will handle risks and complications if they occur.

To keep things simple and safe, look for a doctor who is a member of the International Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS). Don't forego the full process—you should have an in-person consultation, health evaluation and fully informed consent so you know completely about the procedure and understand the risks.

At a minimum, make certain the medical facility meets the licensing standards of the country you will be in. Moreover, don't fall prey to a bargain. In the same manner that prices far below the norm in the states set off a red flag, the same is true if you travel abroad.

Dr. Armando Soto | Plastic Surgeon
I would always advise patients to "keep their safety first" in their list of priorities.

In Central Florida, I frequently am asked to see patients who have problems after surgery abroad. In their effort to save a bit of money, these women now have several problems- they are experiencing a surgical complication and are far from their surgeon, and they have a very difficult time finding someone to take care of them (US surgeons rarely want to get involved in complications of surgery performed by someone else).

In my mind, these risks are not justified by the monetary savings. Be patient, save your money, then enjoy the very high standard of safety and aesthetic outcome that comes from being treated by a surgeon certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery.
