The right, or wrong, haircut can make a world of difference, especially in how thin or full your face looks. The easiest way to fake the illusion of spending hours in the gym all comes down to knowing what works and what doesn’t work for your face.

Cut Bangs
Celebrity stylist Marilee Albin says anything that gives an oval shape to your face is ideal for a slimmer look. “Blunt, shorter bangs that cascade into longer wispy edges are a great start,” she says. “You want to add layers, movement and texture and have a little softness around your face for a slimming effect.” On the flipside, anything that’s too heavy or blunt (in terms of bangs) can make your face look round.

Go Long
The longer your hair, the more it creates an elongating effect on your face. Keeping the length at least to your chest or longer, regardless of the cut, gives the appearance of a slimmer face.

Cut Layers
One of the oldest tricks in the book, long layers create the appearance of a thinner face. Stylist Jeannine Brousseau of Freshen Studio in West Hollywood, CA, says it’s all about layering. “Soft layers around your cheekbones will take both weight and years off your face. The texture of your hair and the shape of your face helps to determine how much layering and how asymmetrical the cut needs to be.” Make sure your stylist cuts them in a longer length that frames your face instead of going too short—hair that falls right around your face will always make it look thinner. Parting the layers down the middle creates a longer jawline, too.
