The Surprising Reasons For A Sudden Breakout

The Surprising Reasons For A Sudden Breakout featured image

You eat right and use the right products but find yourself experiencing a sudden (and very crazy!) case of acne? These two unsuspecting culprits could be the reason.

Stress
Stress does nothing good for your skin. “It can cause hives, acne and other skin problems,” says Westchester, NY, dermatologist David E. Bank, MD. “Increased stress leads to an increase of the pro-inflammatory stress hormone, cortisol, which can bring about acne and vessel constriction. When this happens, there’s also less blood flow to your skin, making it look sallow and dull.” So, every time you get stressed out (the stress needs to be present for a prolonged period of time, not just a few hours), cortisol spikes within your body, ultimately affecting your skin.

In order to get your skin under control, you need
to regulate your stress—either through working out, meditation or anything else that helps you calm down. In the meantime, keeping your pores as clean as possible with a purifying mask and retinol, will help prevent dead skin cells and oil from becoming clogged inside them.

Check Expiration Dates
Have you been using the same jar or bottle of product for a while? It may be past its prime and therefore causing your skin more harm than good. “Products that contain active ingredients or medications can lose their effectiveness with time. Additionally, the product can experience an overgrowth of bacteria or other contaminants, which can hinder your skin’s functionality,” says Dr. Bank.
