When it comes to makeup, bronze tones are beautiful. Simply put, bronze is one of the most ethereal colors in the spectrum. But, with so many different variations on the shade, and so many different ways to wear it on the face, how are you to know which hue best suits your skin tone? We went straight to the experts for the scoop.

Pick the Right Shade for Your Skin Tone
With hundreds of adaptations of bronze, ranging from light and barely there to deep, saturated color, you want to make sure you select the right tone for your skin. The trick is to go about one to two shades darker than your skin tone. Youngblood makeup artist Liliana Pennington says it’s important to pick a color that goes with your skin tone. “From there, get creative because it’s all about color and fun this season.”

Select the Right Formula
When it comes to nailing bronze makeup, the formula you pick is just as important as the color itself. MAKE creative director Ariana Mouyiaris says light sheer shades are more universally appealing. “Darker shades in formulas that are heavily pigmented can be difficult to wear if not applied with a light hand.”

Darken Your Skin
For even more of a bronzed effect, add some luminizer in a golden shade to your foundation, which will create a natural-looking base.

Decide Where to Apply
You can wear bronze tones pretty much anywhere on the face—the eyes, cheeks and lips. “For a sunkissed look, use bronzer and apply it under your cheekbones or sweep it across your forehead, temples, chin and the bridge of your nose,” says Mouyiaris.
