According to Alli Webb, founder of Drybar, investing in a professional-quality brush is just as important as investing in a great blow-dryer. “Certain brushes can have imperfections in the bristles or the barrel that can cause hair to pull, snag or snap, especially when hair is wet and in its most vulnerable state, which can cause frizz and breakage.”

So, which one should you be using to achieve a healthy, beautiful style? “It all depends on your hair type,” says Webb. “For fine to medium hair, go with an ionic, ceramic brush that helps build body and bounce, but has negative ions in it that leave your hair extra smooth and shiny. For coarse or highly textured hair, look for a boar bristle brush. These types allow for more grip and tension, which is needed to straighten and smooth thicker hair.” Webb says that brushes with ionic technology will always deliver the sleekest, shiniest results. “The delivery of negative ions closes the hair cuticle tightly, creating a smooth surface that reflects light for mega shine.”

Our favorites? For those with fine to medium hair, we like Drybar Full Pint Medium Round Brush ($40), and for those with coarse or highly textured hair, a good one to try is Bumble and bumble Round Brush ($85), which features more than 6,000 boar bristles.
