Trend To Try: The Reverse Cat Eye

Eyeliner is arguably the most versatile makeup item available. If done right, it can change the shape of your eyes. Ever since the 60’s, when graphic eyeliner adorned the faces of Bridget Bardot and Audrey Hepburn, women have experimented with multiple iterations of the look. Today is no exception—the most popular interpretation of the moment has flipped a trend on its head, quite literally.

The upside-down cat eye or reverse cat eye is here and from its recent popularity on the catwalk and red carpet alike, it looks like a style with staying power. Spotted in full force this past fashion week, heavy eyeliner only on the lower lash line has been turned down a notch by Hollywood elite. Camilla Belle chose to play with the trend by swapping in a charcoal color for jet-black and smudging to perfection. Keira Knightley also put a smoky twist on the look in her recent campaign for Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle fragrance. Most recently, Emma Stone opted for an even more toned-down version on the red carpet.

YoungBlood makeup artist Max Braun says the trick to achieve this look, is to “lightly apply a charcoal gray shadow to a blending brush, and then sweep the product outward and upward at the corner of the eye.” It’s important, he explains to make sure the line goes up, that way it won’t visibly pull the eye downwards.  Then, use a waterproof black eyeliner in the water line for extra drama.

What do you think of the upside-down cat eye look? Would you try it?
