Helping the environment doesn’t have to hurt your appearance or beauty routine. In fact, eco-conscious beauty has become a popular trend with even luxury brands and celebrities keeping the environment in mind. Not sure where to start to green your routine? We spoke to Boldijarre Koronczay, president and founder of Éminence Organic Skin Care, (loved by many celebrities including Katherine Heigl) for some pointers on a beauty routine that’s efficient and green.

“Choosing a green alternative in skin care doesn’t mean you are compromising on results,” says Koronczay. “Going green with nourishing products produced responsibly will help keep your skin, and the planet, healthy and beautiful.” In honor of Earth Day, read on for more advice from Koronczay:

What kind of adjustments can I make to my current skin care routine?
“A couple of small tweaks to how you use your skin-care products can make a big difference in conservation. Running out of your favorite moisturizer in just a couple of weeks? Too many of us slather our product on thinking ‘the more the better’. But in actual fact, you really only need a dime sized drop.”

What ingredients should I avoid that are particularly harsh on the environment as well as my skin?
“Skip The SLS. Those foaming suds we love are often due to the sodium lauryl sulphate in our cleansers and body washes. But they end up in our oceans and not only present harm to aquatic wildlife, but take too many years to biodegrade. Plus, repeated exposure is proven to have serious effects on our health and may even be linked to cancer. Products without SLS get you just as squeaky clean.”

Do I have to give up the powerful chemical treatments in skin care?
“No, just swap out for organic and natural alternatives. Think you can’t live without retinoids or benzoyl peroxide? Not only can they be harsh on your skin, but the way they are produced can be harsh on the planet too.”

Can I really help save the planet with my beauty routine?
“Yes! Small changes will really make a difference. With Éminence’s Forests for the Future initiative we’re estimated to plant enough trees to produce over 273,000,000 pounds of oxygen in 2013. That’s a major army in the fight against global climate change!”
