Why Does Kourtney Kardashian Drink Butter?

Given the buzz surrounding what appeared to be Kourtney Kardashian guzzling a small amount of butter early in the morning on a recent episode of Kourtney and Kim Take Miami, we wanted to know more. Since we couldn’t let this one go, we did a little digging of our own to find out why.

A tweet from the Kardashian in question clarified that it was ghee, not butter, that she was drinking. However, ghee is actually a type of clarified butter that’s common in Indian cuisine. So in a way, she was still drinking butter—but why?

“Many women incorporate a tablespoon or two of ghee into their diet during pregnancy because it is said to help with your baby’s brain development,” says New York nutritionist, Tanya Zuckerbrot. A reasonable explanation since Kourtney just had her second baby, but she’s not pregnant anymore, so what gives?

“Even though ghee is a saturated fat and high in fat and calories, in moderation it does seem to have some health benefits, which is why Kourtney would probably be drinking it,” says Zuckerbrot. Ghee actually helps your body absorb more of the vitamins and minerals that you consume. It also helps lubricate stiff joints, gives your skin a glow, and helps with digestion.

In a recent interview Kourtney explains that she drinks ghee mainly for beauty reasons. “I drink a teaspoon of liquid ghee first thing every morning and then wait 20 minutes before eating or drinking anything. The oil has been great for my hair and skin. I don't think it’s for everyone though.”

Zuckerbrot agrees that it does have cosmetic properties that benefit hair and nails. But while it all sounds good, Zuckerbrot doesn’t recommend it. “Again, moderation is key and drinking butter of any sort is going to pack on calories and in turn end up causing weight gain and increase the risk of things like cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.”

There you go! The great Kardashian butter-drinking mystery is solved. While we can see why she’s doing it, we’re probably going to sit this one out. Would you try it?

If you research Bulletproof coffee or butter coffee you will see a lot of info on how this combo increases your metabolism and fat burning ability. You have to factor in the calories so you do not over consume each day. I have tried it...butter coffee is delicious!!!

I read that Kourtney likes to saute kale in ghee so I tried it (using just 1 tbsp) and immediately gained a couple pounds - I usually use olive oil. I wonder if trying ghee in the morning by itself makes the difference?

Ghee used in food is delicious. Indian and Ethiopian food generally does use Ghee to get that special flavor. You can buy it in an Indian grocery store. It's much tastier than plain butter. I think fats are a good thing to consume, in moderation, but I choose to get my regular serving of fats in the form of olive oil, nuts, seeds, and avocados. The most delicious nuts of all are Pignoli, and I love Sesame seeds. These are primarily mono-saturated fats and much easier on your cardiovascular system or if Diabetis runs in your family. Butter contains a good amount of vitamin A which is good for your complexion, but many fresh, raw green and leafy vegetables contain Vitamin A, as well as fresh Apricots. There are healthier sources of Vitamin A than butter if you wish to have a serving if this nutrient daily.

Come on, is anyone really surprised? It started with her eating mayonnaise out of the jar and now she's drinking butter that has been purified into pure fat.

Its more about health with a beauty biproduct. I have two tablespoons of ghee in my coffee every morning. For those of you that think you are going to gain weight and that fat is bad for you...shame on you! You have no idea what health is except for what the "low fat fad" has told you. How has the "fat is bad" concept worked out for us over the last 30 years. We are the most obese country in the world. Ghee is purified butter, which means it is pure fat...all the "dairy" has been removed. Enjoy and embrace the healthy fats...your body will thank you!

Its being proven lately that when you start your day off with butter your body is set-up for fat burning. Which is great you start the day off with good fats, grass fed beef, butter, or walnuts and you will lose weight.

FAT in moderation is a good thing people. I may use ghee now and then for cooking. I also use smart balance and butter occasionally. I eat all kinds of nuts. I do not have cellulite at the age of 51.

According to Ayurvedic medicine, ghee strengthens our vital energy cushion at the root of our well-being and immunity. Still, you can just take a spoonful of the stuff, not sure about the benefit of melting and drinking it.

Her skin does look great, and if it is just one teaspoon, I doubt there would be risk of all of those diseases since we have way more than 1 teaspoon in our diets anyway. I would try it.

I think she's still nursing as well, so it could still benefit the baby. She's into all kinds of herbal remedies, teas and crazy stuff, good for her for caring so much about her health and well-being!

I watched the recent episode and actually, before she even drank it on camera, i noticed how great her skin looked when she was doing the little side commentaries during the show. She looks awesome! Beautiful skin... (little jealous) Buy let's not forget, she says is not for everyone. I'm going to go ahead and take word on that!
