Do you love your new hair color, but feel like it seems a little off to you? We may have an idea what it could be—your eyebrows don’t match. Your eyebrows may not be your first thought when changing your hair color, but if they don’t complement your hair, they can throw off any gorgeous shade you’re working.

“If it seems like your brows are looking harsh next to your light hair, you can take the edge off of them by coloring them a half shade lighter,” says celebrity colorist Jennifer J, owner of Juan Juan Salon in Beverly Hills, CA. “Don’t go too light though because you will look washed out.”

Just be sure that the dye used is made specifically for eyebrows and know that not all agree that it’s necessary. For instance, celebrity colorist Sherry Ratay doesn’t recommend dyeing your eyebrows at all. She says, “It’s a chemical, and putting it so close to your eyes isn’t a good idea.”

If you’d rather not risk it, use an eyebrow pencil or powder to temporarily color them. Watch this video to learn how to properly fill them in. If you’re unsure of which tool to use, one to try is Per-fékt Brow Perfection Gel ($22). It has different shades to choose from and the mascara-like brush makes it really easy to apply.
