Ditch Your Treadmill for a Better Workout
Ah, the great outdoors. Once, it was the only place where we could go for an invigorating run. But since the invention of the treadmill, we can now break a sweat without ever leaving the house, or gym. While there are many advantages to using this torture device, er…machine, it might be time to head back outside for your workout.
A study recently published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research says that running on a treadmill takes less effort than running outside. Why? The study shows that the uneven terrain and wind you encounter outdoors requires 10 percent more energy, so you’re likely to burn more calories outside than on the treadmill.
But if running outside isn’t an option for you, you can still hit the treadmill, you just have to turn it up a bit. The study says that running at a three percent incline was the closest match for running outside.
