Steps To In-Office Whitening

A dazzling, healthy smile does wonders for taking the years off—and the results are immediate. You would be surprised how much younger you could look just by eliminating years of built-up stains. Whitening done in your cosmetic dentist’s office can instantly brighten your teeth in less than an hour, with results lasting from six months to a year. Teeth will look dramatically whiter but it’s not for everyone. Those with sensitive teeth should steer clear.

Before the procedure your dentist or hygienist will establish a baseline color of your teeth. This may include taking a photo to help measure the effectiveness of the treatment.

Proper Protection
Your lips and gums will be covered so they are protected from the bleaching solution. The gums will be painted with a barrier that hardens as it dries to protect them from burning or irritation.

Activate the Whitener
A whitening gel is applied to the teeth, and the light/whitening accelerator is activated. Since most hydrogen peroxide formulas stop working after about 20 minutes, the gel is often removed, and a fresh coat is applied. Sessions can be done three times or more in one visit, depending on the severity of the stains and sensitivity of the patient.
