If we took a poll around our office to find out which is more important—hair or makeup—we think the numbers would come out about even. They are both such an integral part of “the look.” And when you see side-by-side pictures of celebrities after a makeover where both the hair and makeup is addressed, you can really see what we mean.

Take funny lady Kristen Wigg for example. At 39, she is on top of her game in Hollywood as one of the top leading women in comedy. It did, however, take her a bit of time to look the part. Pictured before in 2008, Wigg had brassy blond hair with a haircut that did nothing to compliment or give dimension to her face. Going a couple shades darker and adding highlights gives the star a more youthful and pulled together style.

“Kristen’s light hair gives her a bit more of a youthful look but darkened a notch or two really brings her hair color home,” says Los Angeles-based celebrity stylist George Papanikolas. As for the cut, taking off some heaviness from the ends and adding more long layers around her face keeps the cut looking fresh.

Kristen’s makeup has also been addressed as her star has gotten brighter with fame. Lightening up her eye makeup and brows brings less severe edges to her face. Lightly lining the eyes is okay, but black and dark colors start to look harsh as you age.

Also “a good concealer is one of the most important products in your beauty arsenal,” says celebrity makeup artist Marco Berardini, and it looks like Kristen has realized this fact. “The more fluid the concealer, the more natural it tends to appear while still giving great coverage.”
